All Stitched Up: Abigail Cecile’s Woodland Home Spring

Wow! This canvas was such a fun stitch!

In the early days of January, I turned to Abigail Cecile’s Woodland Home Spring as a way to unwind when I got home from traveling in Tanzania and Kenya. Before I left, I made a pile of my stitch wish list from my “stash” and set it aside for when I would come back after a month away. After almost 50 hours of travel back to the island, I came down with fever for a couple of days. All I wanted to was lie in bed and needlepoint this canvas I had bought last spring and watch tv. (I hadn’t access to ma shows in two weeks). After polishing off a few smaller ornaments, I excitedly reached this canvas in my stack and dumped out my threads bags for inspo.

It has been almost a year since I stumbled upon Abigail’s post of this project along with a number of sweet ornaments last spring. There were so many darling choices on her website and I immediately fell in love with this vignette! It reminded me of fair isle sweaters, little ski chalets on the sides of trails and winters in Vermont. When I look at it, I am immediately brought back to the gondola at Telluride or skiing to the Waffle Haus at Okemo.

I admit that I scooped up a few others as well (stay tuned and check out below).

If you toggle back and forth between the canvas stitched above and the painted version directly below, you will find that I changed the colors up a teensy bit. As much as I seriously do love the background color choice Abigail had made, it came down to personal style and simply what was left in my stash here in Canada.

It’s tricky to get threads here, so I rely with what I brought with me in September and a few things I picked up while traveling. While I love to paint with lots of bright color, at home, our palette is paired down to a natural scheme. If I was making this as a gift, which I selfishly decided to keep for myself, I would have stuck to the background color- ugh, it’s so cute!

Below you will find a list of the threads that I stitched this canvas with and as well as some notes!

As much as this canvas has every possibility of being flourished with a variety of stitches, I decided to stick to good ol’ basketweave. I plan to have it framed for our home, here in British Columbia.

Enjoy!

Thread Pairings:

Salsa by Silk & Ivory: Detailing on the chalet and an interior border. The border choice was one I made on the fly after deciding to add navy.

Classic Navy by Silk & Ivory: Detailing for the house, trees and border. I really like when colors have at least one other touch point in the piece- so I added this for balance and for future matting.

Sand by Silk & Ivory: This was a decision that I made for the background. A true to form color would maybe be Thistle by Silk & Ivory.

Pink Cow by Silk & Ivory: Fine detailing on the chalet. True to painted canvas and lovely pop of color!

Iris by Silk & Ivory: Color of the chalet and some of the dotted detailing- true to canvas. At some point, I transitioned into Periwinkle- I had gotten the threads mixed up in my stash bag and just rolled with it

Green Bean by Silk & Ivory: This was a really fun color to try to match. Thankfully, I had a thread color in my stash that fit the bill. It was the perfect warm green to complement the warmth the sand brought.

One Strand of White or very light blue for the detailing on the frieze of the house.
