Baby, Baby, Baby
As I grow older, it has been really fun to see how various life events have informed my work. Friends getting married, cousins having little girls, signing up to climb Kilimanjaro. Every occasion calls for a handmade heirloom to celebrate or commemorate the importance of each moment.
My favorites to date are of fairly gender neutral canvases for anticipated wee ones- a popular request.
Children I have been lucky to read bedtime stories to, built sandcastles with and have taken care of when they were small have inspired my work tremendously. I have been taking care of children ranging in ages from newborn to teenagers since I was eleven. Yep, eleven. While my mother worked all hours of the clock, I took care of my four younger siblings. I was then promoted as an occasional babysitter and eventually spent my summers nannying full-time. In fact, I was nannying for a number of families in Burlington, VT when I was starting my business.
I have learned a lot from those kiddos. Children harness a magic, a magic that we all seek to find in the world once we’ve lost it. There is nothing more delightful than the wonder and curiosity of a child. The pure joy and excitement in the littlest of details. Imaginations run wild, scientists in their own rights, the floor becomes lava, trees can talk and buildings feel like fortresses. The magic that exists within the stars from the eyes of a child are what I try to emulate in each thoughtfully painted piece.
Below are a few signs that I have designed with important little ones in mind…
