I thoroughly enjoyed stitching this collaborative needlepoint canvas between Emma Hall and Unwind Studio called Ethiopian Ravine. It’s colorful, it’s vibrant and it was such a joy. The back is almost as beautiful as the front in a fun tweed-esque weave. It reminds me of a beautiful J.Crew skirt my mother bought me for boarding school interviews when I was having a Blair Waldorf obsession phase.

Although needlepoint is my job, I don’t ever actually really get to stitch. It sounds silly- I’m just a quick stitcher! When I do get to stitch, I much prefer to stitch projects by other artists. I love Cristina of Unwind’s model of working with artists outside of the needlepoint realm.

This piece is really spectacular. I love landscapes, I love the colors, and the story by the artist.

This canvas came as a kit and I used leftover wool from a Hannah Bass kit for the sky- cream just felt right and I loved the juxtaposition of the scratchy (meant as a compliment) wools against the buttery cotton DMC threads.

Do be wary, American stitchers, that the Portuguese canvas is printed on a thinner mesh than the Zweigart Mono that you are accustomed to. It’s a bit thinner, there’s a wee bit up to interpretation from the printing and there are no “steps” or “poles” due to the interlocking nature of the weave.

Do not fret! I loved every second of stitching this project and am sure you will too!
